Description

The former Kadomi Family Residence is located in the Kuroshima district, which flourished as a settlement for ship owners and sailors of the Kitamae shipping route. Kitamae ships were said to have traded at a per-voyage profit equivalent to 100 million yen in today’s money, which is also a valuable historical record highlighting the time when shipping was the mainstay of trade. It is said that the current structure of the house was constructed sequentially after a great fire in the late 19th century (1871). The Kadomi family had been trading along the coast of the Sea of Japan with Kitamae ships since the mid-19th century, but by the end of the 19th century, they had withdrawn from the shipping business due to the sluggishness of trading by conventional Kitamae ships, which had been outdone in terms of operation speed and loading capacity by steamships and railroads. After that, the family attempted to stabilize itself through diversifying into fields such as land management, fishing, and financial business. The residence was severely damaged by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake of 2007, but its recovery was completed in 2011, and it stands as it is today. The house is situated on a gentle slope, with a pathway that leads to the beach on the west side. The style of the building, typical of the houses of those involved in the shipping industry, is still in good condition, and the air of the prosperity that existed here can still be seen today.
