Wajima City, located in the northwest part of the Noto Peninsula, is a city with a population of about 30,000 surrounded by lush greenery and the sea. In the Middle Ages, Sojiji Temple, the main temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism, was established here, and in the age of the Kitamae ships, the town was a prosperous maritime transportation hub known as Oyanominato, while its lacquerware industry (Wajima lacquerware) also flourished here from the mid-Edo Period (1603-1867) onward.
