The Tokinokuni was an old family that was founded by Taira Tokitada, who, after splitting off from the Kamitokuni, ruled the surrounding villages as a wealthy farmer of the Kaga domain and also served as a deputy of the Kaga domain. The main house is thought to have been built around the middle of the Edo period and is characteristic of private houses in the Noto region. Together with the garden, it conveys the prosperity of the area to the present day. Nearby is the Sogi Coast, a place of scenic beauty and a natural monument.

Description

The Tokikuni family was started by Taira no Tokitada, a court noble in the late 12th century who was exiled to Noto in 1185. His son, Tokikuni, took up farming, and eventually earned prosperity as a wealthy farmer. In 1634, due to political circumstances, Tokiyasu (13th generation) divided the Tokikuni family in two: the Kami-Tokikuni family, which was the domain of the Shogunate (the government of Japan at that time), and the Tokikuni family, which was the domain of the Kaga Clan (the local government of the region at that time), and Tokiyasu was based in the Kaga Domain. The main building is a single-story wooden structure that is 24.2 meters wide, 14.7meters long, has a total area of 355.7 square meters, and is topped with a large thatched roof. It is said that it took 50 years to build in 3 generations and has a history that goes back 350 years. It is a representative example of a prestigious private house in the Noto region. *The Heike is a clan with the family name Taira. This is the family of Taira no Kiyomori, who rose to power in the late 12th century (the end of the Heian Period).
